THE GOVERNMENT OF HONDURAS AND THE ASSOCIATION OF FLORIDA-CARIBBEAN CRUISE LINES (FCCA)




At the request of the government of President Juan Orlando Hernández, in 2016, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Government of Honduras and the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Lines Association (FCCA), with the purpose of generating job opportunities for a thousand It is from Honduran sailors on the cruises of this association around the world.

What is required to join the FCCA program?

The requirements to join the program are the following:

● Advanced level in the English language (oral & written).
Must be certified in the following Maritime Training:
● Basic Course on Maritime Safety (Lps.1,100)
● Awareness for Seafarers (Lps.600)
● Passenger Ship (Lps.600)
● Crowd Control (Lps.600)
● Boat Management (Lps. 900).
● Course (s) in INFOP oriented to hospitality or maintenance.
● Have experience in the hospitality or maintenance area for more than 1 year.
● Marine Identification Book
● Complete the application forms.
● Updated resume
● Labor references for the area that applies.

Does the application to the FCCA program have any cost?

Applying to the program is free as it is an initiative of President Juan Orlando Hernández to increase job offers for seafarers and reduce unemployment rates, thereby improving the quality of life and generating economic stability for the population; as part of the 20/20 Plan, which is the Government’s National Program for the Generation of Employment and Economic Growth.

Where do you teach courses for seafarers?

Seafarer courses are taught in 3 training schools nationwide located in:

What should my resume have?

The resume must contain information such as full name, identity number, age, marital status, and telephone numbers. Also, it is recommended to list relevant work experience by listing employers in descending order (starting with their current employer), the nature of the company and if it is a hotel or restaurant indicate their classification (stars , diamonds, rosettes).

Also indicate period of employment, always use this format: mm / dd / yy, add a note of at least three achievements made within each function, include the reason (s) for separation from each employer, If there are interruptions in periods of employment, explain why.

Why do we need to know all this? … So that the FCCA member cruise companies can find out about your work skills.

If I have a tattoo, can I work on a cruise ship?

Tattoos in visible places on the body (arms, legs or face) are not allowed, except in the kitchen area where the uniform covers the entire body

Do I need to speak a language?

Proficiency in the English language at an advanced level is essential for job performance on the ships of FCCA member companies.

How do I certify my skills in a particular occupation?

They may be accredited through Diplomas, Certificates or Courses from training centers such as INFOP.

What profession or occupations are applying?

SAll professions or occupations are required to perform within a ship; however, the requests will be determined according to the needs of each cruise line member of the FCCA. What is the maximum age?

There is no maximum age, however ages between 21 and 50 years are prefered.

How long will my contract last?

The duration of the contract will depend on the cruise company you work for, however crew
contracts usually have a duration of six to nine months, extendable.

What would my on-board schedule be?

This information will be provided by the cruise line you work with, since they handle cruises with different destinations around the world.

Do I need an American Visa?

Yes; Once you have been selected to work in one of the FCCA member cruise lines, you will be sent the necessary documents to process it, since in order to work on board the Cruises, it is necessary to have a C1 / D American Crew Member Visa which is processed at the Embassy of the United States, with a letter from the company with whom you will work for

Do I have to pay for my air ticket to get to the port where I have to board the cruise?

All expenses related to your round trip transportation to board the cruise and return to your country of origin once the employment contract has ended, will be borne by the hiring FCCA member cruise line.

How would I go about communicating with my family members?

Inside the Cruise ship you will find prepaid Internet access, as well as telephone service.
Likewise, the crew can use the Internet service in the destination ports since the cost is lower than that on board.

How would I receive my salary payment?

Most companies deposit your salary into a bank account and give you a card that you can use anywhere in the word. Some companies have ATMs on board the cruise ship where you can make withdrawals.

Can I send money to my family from the ship?

Yes, there are different options. You can request the administration that a specific amount of your salary be deposited monthly to an account of your choice or you can send money from the ports, using agencies such as Western Union or Moneygram.

What can I do in my free time on board a cruise ship?

On board the cruise you will find areas specifically designed for the use of the crew such as a gym, bar, dining room and recreation areas which you can use at established times. In addition, as part of the recreational activities for the crew on board, Karaoke, Bingo, soccer tournaments, basketball, bicycle rental in destination ports, DVD movie rental, etc. are held.

What can I do if I have a language barrier other than with English?

You should seek help from your immediate boss or from a colleague on board who knows the command of the requested language

What will my assigned resting place be?

Accommodation is provided by the cruise line at NO COST to you. Generally you will share a cabin (room) with another crew member (s) of the same sex and of the same position, in an area destined inside the ship to the seafarers’ cabins.

Can you be embarked as a couple?

If it is allowed, however it will depend on the policy of each company and if they both meet the profile that the cruise line requires, it is important to take into account that there are 14 cruise lines that are part of the FCCA and that they have several cruises with different destinations around the world, so not necessarily if they manage to enter the same company they will have to work on the same cruise.

What type of prohibition does the seafarer have on board?

It is very important to mention that the use and consumption of illegal substances on board is STRICTLY PROHIBITED and constant anti-doping and alcohol abuse tests are carried out on the crew. The crew that is caught using or consuming prohibited substances is immediately discharged and handed over to the corresponding authorities, which leads to their repatriation.

Can a minor embark?

International regulations establish that it is prohibited for persons under 18 years of age to be employed or hired to work on board a ship.

How can I apply for a position as an officer?

This will depend on the training, experience and boarding time that the sailor has, and the company is the one that will provide a promotion letter when the case warrants it; It is important to take into account that it is the maritime authority that issues the competence certificate that will determine if the seafarer meets the requirements to obtain said position.

What will my assigned resting place be?

Accommodation is provided by the cruise line at NO COST to you. Generally you will share a cabin (room) with another crew member (s) of the same sex and of the same position, in an area destined inside the ship to the seafarers’ cabins.

What would be the minimum number of hours of rest?

The minimum number of hours of rest shall not be less than 10 hours for each 24-hour period, nor 77 hours for each seven-day period.

Am I entitled to a vacation?

Every seaman employed on a ship has the right to enjoy a vacation or rest period, it will depend on several factors such as the duration of his last contract or the company where he embarked, in addition to this it is important to note that Honduras is part of the Maritime Labor Convention 2006 (MLC).

In case of loss of the ship or shipwreck, am I entitled to compensation?

Every seafarer has the right to receive adequate compensation in the event of injury, or unemployment due to the loss of the ship or its sinking.

What is the value of the Certificate of Competence?

It is US $ 10.00 for two (02) years and US $ 25.00 for five (05) years

Do I have to take a medical exam to apply for my license?

es; In each of the three cities where a school for seafarers operates, there are several doctors who can issue such a medical certificate; that is, in Omoa, La Ceiba and Tegucigalpa.

Where can I complete my marine license procedure?

You can get it in Omoa, but it takes about 15 days for it to be delivered to you. It is recommended to process it in Tegucigalpa because it is delivered the same day.
