Nautical events and sports

The Organic Law of Merchant Marine clearly defines that the Maritime Administration will control and coordinate all activities related maritime transport, maritime safety and marine environment protection, authorize, register and monitor the activities of those engaged in maritime affairs such as diving as determined by the Organic Law and Regulation “ Less than five (5) tons Vessel Basic Regulations “(Agreement 001 of 12.26.1998).

Natural or legal persons wishing to make a sports event must request written permission from the General Directorate of the Merchant Marine, specifying the date, place, names of participants, names and numbers of records of vessels involved, the hour route, parts of the area covering the event and any other information. This permission must be requested (10) days prior to the date specified for the event.-


Water sports events should be organized and developed as follows:

  1. In the inland water bodies from the fifty (50) meters away from the beach, starting the tide line that is upon executing the event; in the case of Lake Yojoa, the fifty (50) meters were taken from the edge of it.
  2. In the territorial waters it shall be performed from two hundred and fifty (250) meters counted in the same way.
  3. In all aquatic sports event must be demarcated by using buoys, the area from which the event will take place; taking into account the distances established in the previous paragraphs.
  4. Each participant will carry a life jacket for water motorcycles and similar and other types of vessels.
  5. The owners of the vessels must comply with all safety standards of human life by providing for them the required safety equipment.

These sporting events will be supervised by staff of Harbormaster in order to monitor that Articles 8, 9, 10 and 11 are met and submit an inspection report to this Directorade.


The vessels that are not registered with the General Directorate of the Merchant Marine may not participate in it. Also sportive and similar vessels should use life jackets.



Failure to comply with the above will be considered as infringement of any act or omission in breach of provisions here, so we will proceed to the appropriate sanction as provided in Article 14 of the Maritime Transportation Regulations.




The vessels fall within the classification established must pay a registration fee and another in the form of annuity or if enrollment and another by way of annuity or, if applicable, for travel to perform as follows:


  • A) Vessels engaged in sporting, recreational and non-commercial activities.
  • B) Cabotage vessels engaged in the transport of passengers
  • C) Cabotage vessels engaged to freight
  • D) Cabotage vessels engaged to commercial fishing
  • E) Outdoor sailing boats dedicated to passenger transport
  • F) Foreign navigation vessels engaged in the transport of passengers

All the above vessels will have to place a sticker on the outside of the hull, the bow in order to identify their respective registry number. They will be given by the General Directorate of the Merchant Marine and the Port where appropriate, after they have been registered.


Once fulfilled the requirements set out previously the Directorate shall register the vessel extending the corresponding boat license which will last for a year and a card with the characteristics of the vessel and this will empower stakeholders to sail hoisting the national flag and devote the approved activity. The Directorate granted in special cases the navigation permit for a period of time of three to six months.


Vessels less than five tons engaged in foreign navigation must pay an inspection fee, as follows:


  • A.- Foreign navigation vessels engaged in the transport of passengers;
  • B.- Foreign navigation vessels engaged to freight:
