The General Directorate of the Merchant Marine has 13 Harbormaster in the national territory in the Major and Minor Ports under the responsibility of the Harbormaster Department based in Tegucigalpa, Honduras with a Maritime Information Centre 24 hours and 365 days a year.


Functions and responsibilities according to its Organic Law in the Title V, Chapter I, Article 96, 97 and 98.


In particular it will be up to:

  • Authorize or prohibit the entry and departure of ships in the territorial waters of Honduras.
  • Determine for reasons of maritime security anchoring and maneuvering in the maritime areas of Honduras.
  • Regulate use of channels of input and output ports.
  • Small Vessel records.
  • Satellite monitoring of the entire national fleet.
  • Coordination of Maritime Search and Rescue.
  • Marine environmental monitoring.

The port authorities and their respective jurisdictions in the following regulatory functions:


  • Authorize or prohibit vessels entering and leaving Honduras territorial waters.
  • Determine for maritime security reasons anchoring areas of maritime spaces of Honduras, without perjury of the powers of the port authority.
  • Regulate use of the channels of input and output ports.
  • Regulate, including docking, maneuvers to be performed by ships that leave dangerous goods.
  • Monitor and regulate and provide timely pilotage services and equipment when necessary.
  • Inspect and monitor the technical inspection of ships dangerous goods.
  • Work concerning maritime safety and combating pollution of the maritime environment as regards ship platforms and other marine facilities.
  • Maritime salvage.
  • Satellite monitoring of vessels of the national fleet.






Functions

he Organic Law of Merchant Marine clearly defines that the Maritime Administration will control and coordinate all activities related maritime transport, maritime safety and marine environment protection, authorize, register and monitor the activities of those engaged in maritime affairs such as diving as determined by the Organic Law and Regulation “ Less than five (5) tons Vessel Basic Regulations “(Agreement 001 of 12.26.1998).
