The Ship Registry Department aims for objective the registration of vessels and of natural or legal persons that have regarding the vessels, the character of owners, leaseholders, or shipowners.

The Department of Seafarers is responsible for training aspirants to merchant seamen and merchant seafarers, as well as issuing the certification of national and / or foreign seafarers

The General Directorate of the Merchant Marine (GDMM), fulfilling its role of Maritime Authority has powers to regulate and control marine traffic, ensuring the safety of human life at sea, safety of navigation and prevention and control marine pollution, the latter through the Marine Environment Protection Department.

In charge of streamlining the control of maritime activities, the due process of analysis of the information produced by the DGMM and strict compliance with the rules that govern maritime regulation in all aspects, especially for matters of national security and defense.

This department is responsible for defining policies regarding maritime safety, endorsement of technical certificates relating to international conventions of vessels flying the flag of Honduras; preparation of technical reports and monitoring activity in Honduras merchant fleet sailing in the world.

The Maritime Industry represents 10% of the gross domestic product and is the fastest growing sector in the national economy. Ports are necessary for the development of the country and the services they provide are public, even if they are performed by private companies.
